Sector General is a hospital in space, to treat all life forms in the Galaxy. The hospital is run by medics from over 70 different species. To allow these doctors (some of the best on their home worlds) to treat all races that arrive at Sector General they use "tapes" to give them the required knowledge. These tapes are recordings of the minds of the greatest physician from each species, as a result their personality is also recorded as well as their knowledge. This means that the doctors undergo voluntary schizophrenia. This is even worse for the Diagnostians who retain for long periods of time up to 10 tapes at a time.
The hospital treats many wierd creatures, from levitating Dinosaurs, to intelligent cabbages. As the majorty of them discribe themselves as human in their own language a system of clincal identification has to be used. This uses a combination of four letters.
As an example, an Earth Human is classified as DBLF.
There are some anomalies, for example the AACP have a vegetable Metabolism, but are fitted into the same category as piscatorial life.
Sector General is the creation of the author James White and is the location for his hero, Doctor Conway (a DBLF), to have most of his adventures.
